Grow a Garden Beginner Guide to Crops and Mutations

October 30, 2026 · 5 min read

On this page

The fastest way to start in Grow a Garden is to sell cheap crops for quick cash, then move to multi-harvest plants as soon as you can afford them. After that, more land, rarer seeds, and mutations are what make you rich.

The game has changed many times since 2025, and most beginner guides were written before later updates. The basics below still match the official game description, but seed prices, weather types, and event items can change. Trust what you see in the game.

How the game works

  1. Buy seeds at the shop when they restock.
  2. Equip a seed and click the brown plots in your farm to plant it.
  3. Wait for it to grow. Your garden keeps growing while you are offline.
  4. Harvest the crop and sell it for Sheckles.
  5. Spend the Sheckles on better seeds and repeat.

The game opens with stalls on either side of the main platform. One side sells seeds and buys your crops, and the other sells gear and has the daily quests.

Your first purchases

Start with Carrots. They are a quick, cheap way to get your first Sheckles. Plant them, sell them, and buy more until you can afford something better.

Switch to multi-harvest crops. There are two crop types:

Type What happens Examples
Single-harvest You collect it once, then it is gone Carrot
Multi-harvest It keeps growing fruit after each harvest Strawberry, Blueberry, Tomato, Corn

Multi-harvest plants save you from buying and replanting all the time, so they earn more over the long run. Once you can afford them, make them most of your garden.

Redeem codes. The current codes only give decorations, so they will not speed you up, but they are free. See our Grow a Garden codes guide for the list.

Do the daily quests. They are easy to skip, but you get three simple challenges each day, and finishing them earns seed packs. Those packs can hold seeds the normal shop does not sell.

Check the shop often

The Seed Shop restocks every five minutes, and rare seeds show up at random. You can stand near the shop and listen for the sound that plays on a restock. Rarer seeds are worth more, and the rarity ladder climbs from Common to Divine.

Do not leave plots empty while you wait for something rare. Every empty space is income you are not earning, and you can replace cheap plants with better ones later.

Use your space well

Early on you can plant anywhere. As your garden fills up, a little planning helps:

  • Pack small plants close together. Small multi-harvest crops can sit in tight clusters to save room.
  • Give big plants their own area. Blueberry, Coconut, and Dragon Fruit can need a lot of space once fully grown.
  • Use a Trowel to move plants. You can rearrange your garden without losing a plant.
  • Plant Bamboo beside tall trees. You can climb it to reach fruit at the top.

How mutations make you money

Mutations are special versions of crops that sell for much more. This is where most of the money comes from later on. Some mutations can stack on one crop, which raises the price again.

Mutation How you get it What guides report
Wet Rain About a 50% chance during rain
Shocked Thunderstorm Thunderstorms are rare and can also apply Wet
Gold Random 20 times the normal price
Rainbow Random 50 times the normal price

These numbers come from a 2025 guide and may have changed, so use them as a rough idea.

When it rains, get active. Rain makes plants grow much faster, so harvest and sell as quickly as you can until it stops. Weather also gives you a chance at those extra-valuable mutations.

When to buy sprinklers and other gear

Do not rush gear. Sprinklers and watering cans pay off once you have valuable crops. Until then, spend on more land and rarer seeds first.

Sprinklers come in tiers: Basic, Advanced, Master, and Godly. Higher tiers are used to raise your mutation chances. Once you have a good cluster of plants, put a sprinkler in the middle so nearby plants benefit.

A common routine for later in the game looks like this:

  1. Plant your best crops in a group.
  2. Place your sprinklers around them.
  3. Leave the garden to grow for 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  4. Come back and harvest what has mutated.

Pets

Pets give passive bonuses, such as faster growth or better rare drops. Names you will often see recommended include the Queen Bee, Sea Otter, and Dragon. Those are bigger goals, not day-one purchases. Pet strength can shift with updates, so read a pet's description in the game before you spend a lot on it.

Playing with friends

Friends make the game faster. Beebom reports that each friend you invite adds a 10% cash boost when you sell crops. Friends can also give you crops from their gardens, which can be a real early boost for a new player.

Be careful with trades. Only trade inside the game, and never give your password to anyone who promises free items. Do not buy pets or items from outside websites, because that can get your account in trouble and many of those sellers are scams.

Small tricks that save time

  • Hold E instead of tapping it to collect crops faster on a computer.
  • Check before you sell. Look through your harvest for mutated fruit so you know what you are selling.
  • Plant before you log off. Offline growth is free, so never leave with empty plots.
  • Watch events. Seasonal events can add exclusive seeds and pets. The event rules change often, so check the in-game notices.

Your order of goals

  1. Sell Carrots for your first Sheckles.
  2. Buy multi-harvest seeds and fill the plot.
  3. Do the daily quests for seed packs.
  4. Expand and buy rarer seeds at each restock.
  5. Add sprinklers, then pets, once your crops are worth boosting.
