Murder Mystery 2 How to Win as Murderer and Sheriff

To win as Murderer, equip a power that suits the map and remove the gun before you hunt the crowd. To win as Sheriff, learn what each power looks like, so you can tell a real target from a trick before you spend a shot. Most of the skill in both roles comes from knowing powers and maps.
The official game page only states the goals. The Murderer must eliminate everyone and avoid the Sheriff, and the Sheriff is the only one with a weapon who can take the Murderer down. The numbers below come from a fan write-up dated October 29, 2026, summarizing the Murder Mystery 2 wiki. We could not open the wiki pages ourselves, and the wiki disagrees with itself in places. Check the shop in game for current values.
Powers at a glance
Powers were called perks before Season 1. They belong to the Murderer only, and you equip one at a time.
| Power | Price | What it does | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Footsteps | Free | Shows trails and direction of other players | Trails fade, about 40 seconds by one note |
| Sleight | 1,000 Coins or 100 Diamonds | Faster throws, faster knife return | Passive |
| Ninja | 1,000 Coins or 100 Diamonds | Silent stabs and silent coin pickups with knife out | Passive |
| Haste | 3,000 Coins or 400 Diamonds | 10% faster run | Only while knife is out |
| Sprint | 3,000 Coins or 400 Diamonds | 50% faster run for 5 seconds | 27-second cooldown, leaves a trail |
| Trap | 3,000 Coins or 400 Diamonds | Up to 4 hidden traps, 4-second freeze | Older note says 3 traps and 3 seconds |
| Decoy | 3,000 Coins or 400 Diamonds | Up to 3 clones that absorb a shot | Players pass through clones |
| Fake Gun | 3,000 Coins or 400 Diamonds | A fake gun for the whole round | Wiki calls it the least used |
| Ghost | 6,000 Coins or 800 Diamonds | Invisible for 5 seconds | Swinging ends it, cooldown 20 or 30 seconds (conflict) |
| X-Ray | 6,000 Coins or 800 Diamonds | See through walls for 4 seconds | Page says 26-second cooldown, shop text says 30 |
Winning as Murderer
Buy in this order. Our opinion, based on price and the wiki's own notes: Ninja or Sleight first because they are cheap, then Haste. The wiki calls Haste one of the best, and its map pages name it most often. Save Ghost and X-Ray for later.
Match the power to the map. These suggestions come from wiki editors, not from win rates:
| Map | Suggested powers | Reason given |
|---|---|---|
| Hospital 3 | Haste, Sprint, Ninja | Small map |
| Bank 2 | Ninja, Haste, sometimes Fake Gun early | Quick stabs |
| Factory | Sleight, Haste, or Decoy and Trap for the gun holder | Open map |
| Office 3 | Ghost, Sprint, Ninja, Trap | Ghost helps against a Sheriff camping cramped hallways |
| Police Station | X-Ray | Big and spread out |
| Mil-Base | X-Ray, Haste, Sleight | X-Ray helps find hiders |
| Mansion 2, House 2 | Haste, Sprint, Sleight | Named on both pages |
TheGamer adds that Mansion 2 and House 2 have closed hallways and rooms with no exit, which helps you corner people. It rates Bank 2, Hotel, Workplace and Factory as high-mobility maps, so expect more running there.
Decide who goes first. A Sheriff is the only thing that can end your round. Once you know who has the gun, plan around them:
- Use Ghost to get close, then swing. It ends when you attack, so it is for the approach.
- Spend Decoy clones in the Sheriff's line of sight. A shot at a clone is a shot not at you.
- Use X-Ray to find the Sheriff and any dropped gun, since it shows the gun too.
- Do not use Fake Gun with a real Sheriff in the room. The wiki warns that two guns give you away.
Beat looping. The Sleight page says faster throws counter a player looping you at close range. If someone keeps circling a pillar, stop chasing and throw.
Handle the dropped gun. A dropped gun is your biggest danger, since an Innocent can pick it up. The Hospital 3 advice is to guard it with Trap. Be careful about simply standing over it, because TheGamer points out that Innocents win if the timer runs out. Trap it and move on if you can. Remember the wiki's note that a trapped Sheriff or Hero can still shoot.
Pace your kills. Gameranx warns that rushing gets you exposed. Ninja helps here, since no one hears a stab when others are busy. If your role feels obvious, TheGamer's advice is to collect coins and act normal for the first seconds.
Winning as Sheriff
Use the gun as information first. Sources disagree on whether to show your gun early. TheGamer says Sheriffs often do it to earn trust. Other guides say stay hidden because the Murderer will hunt you. Fake Gun also means a player holding a gun is not proof of anything. Our suggestion: stay hidden on small maps.
Learn the tells for each power.
| What you see | Likely power | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A player suddenly speeds up, with a pale trail | Sprint | Wait out the 5 seconds, it has a long cooldown |
| A player runs a bit faster with knife out | Haste | You cannot outrun it for long, use obstacles |
| A player freezes in place | Trap | Traps are hidden from you, so avoid that area and watch for the Murderer |
| A person standing still, players pass through them | Decoy | Do not shoot, walk into it or look for the real one |
| Someone flickers out of sight | Ghost | Back into the open and wait for the swing |
| Knife throws come back very fast | Sleight | Do not loop close, get distance |
| A body drops with no sound | Ninja | Sound will not warn you, check sightlines often |
| Someone goes straight to your hiding spot | Footsteps or X-Ray | Move, your trail or position may be known |
If you step in a trap, keep aiming. The wiki says you can still shoot while frozen, so a Murderer who walks up to finish you can lose the round.
Pick your ground. TheGamer recommends a spot with a good view but warns against staying too long. If you get chased, put obstacles in the way, then move into open space where you can sidestep thrown knives and still get a shot.
Do not fire on a guess. The guides we read agree this hurts your team, but we could not confirm any exact penalty. Wait until you see a knife or an attack.
Use height and chat. TheGamer says high ground or nearby obstacles give you more time to aim and react. Read chat for reports, but remember the Murderer can lie there as well.
If the gun changes hands
As an Innocent who picks up the dropped gun, you take on the Sheriff's job. Players often post the gun's location in chat. If the Murderer is nearby, it is probably a camp. TheGamer suggests faking a retreat and coming back, or just staying safe and collecting coins, because a timeout is still an Innocent win. Do not take a risky grab if the clock is nearly out.
Powers have changed many times since 2019, and the last buffs noted were at Christmas 2025. Trust what the in-game shop shows.
